Over the Swell

Over the Swell promotes marine conservation and awareness of the endangered whale shark in the Gulf of Guinea.

Over the Swell

The endangered whale shark faces many threats, including overfishing, ship strikes and marine pollution. These factors threaten not only whale shark populations, but also the balance of marine ecosystems in the Gulf of Guinea. Over the Swell works to conserve them by raising awareness among local communities, especially fishermen, of the importance of these species in the marine food chain. The association organizes educational campaigns and sea outings to observe migratory fauna, while collecting scientific data essential to their protection.

Our support

Play for Nature supports Over the Swell in their project to scientifically study and conserve the whale shark in the Sao Tome and Principe archipelago by 2025. The project includes an education campaign aimed at local fishermen to limit negative interactions with whale sharks and raise awareness of good practices. Sea outings will be organized to observe migratory fauna, collect data and involve local communities in monitoring marine ecosystems.

Play for Nature’s funding supports these activities by financing the education campaign, the necessary scientific equipment and the sea trips. This support aims to strengthen the involvement of local communities and ensure the sustainable protection of the whale shark in this unique region.
