The Manta Trust

The Manta Trust works to protect manta rays in Papua New Guinea, combining scientific research, training for local rangers and participatory conservation with local communities.

The Manta Trust

The Manta Trust works to protect manta rays in Papua New Guinea and beyond, through innovative scientific research, inclusive education and ambitious conservation policies. In 2023, it launched a five-year plan to strengthen its global impact, accompanied by a strategy on education and diversity to break down barriers of inclusion in the marine conservation sector. Since 2012, The Manta Trust has also developed initiatives such as genetic monitoring of ray populations and photo-identification databases to guide long-term protection efforts.

Our support

Play for Nature supports The Manta Trust in its manta ray conservation initiative in Papua New Guinea. The project actively involves local communities in training rangers to collect data and monitor species. Particular attention is being paid to establishing a regional photo-identification database and to genetic research to better understand local populations and their links with other regions of the Pacific.

Play for Nature’s funding covers the cost of genetic material, ranger salaries and administrative costs. This support helps to strengthen conservation efforts while sustainably involving local players and consolidating partnerships with regional communities and institutions.
