Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a conservation organization that rescues and rehabilitates chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Most of them are orphans rescued from illegal pet trafficking, whose mothers have been hunted for bushmeat. The sanctuary provides a safe shelter for these chimpanzees, offering them care, food and comfort.
Tacugama carries out conservation actions with the local population to protect chimpanzees. An awareness program works with local communities to achieve sustainable management of natural resources and propose alternative crops to avoid deforestation and hunting. The organization also works with schools through its environmental education program to arouse the interest of young people in environmental protection.
The organization carries out biodiversity research, including chimpanzee census work. It is also involved in strengthening laws to save wildlife, and hires a patrol team to monitor the forest and enforce these laws.
We support Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in its project that combines sport, education and conservation to save chimpanzees. With fewer than 5,500 individuals in the wild in Sierra Leone, the western chimpanzee is one of the most endangered primates in the world. Deforestation, bushmeat hunting, illegal wildlife trafficking, infrastructure construction, industrial agriculture and the exploitation of natural resources are all responsible for the decline in chimpanzee populations.
This project aims to combine sport and education through cultural events in local communities, training for teachers, workshops with government staff and men’s and women’s football tournaments with young people to raise awareness about the need to protect chimpanzees and their habitats.
