Biodiv’Sport
Tube Awù is an association that has been working on marine and coastal biodiversity conservation in the Manyange na Elombo Campo marine park in Cameroon since 2014.
The community research and development association works on three priority areas. The first is the ecological monitoring of biodiversity, in particular that of sea turtles in their natural environment in order to locate nesting sites and feeding areas. It also monitors catches from artisanal fishing and tracks other marine animals such as humpback whales, dolphins, rays and sharks. The second area is education and awareness of communities on the protection of biodiversity. Tube Awù works in 6 establishments with children in and out of school through an environmental education program. The association also educates local communities about the role of the marine park, its biodiversity, the problems that threaten it, and the role of each individual in the protection and conservation of this biodiversity. The last area is community development and support. Tube Awù supports fishermen and communities with projects that contribute to improve their well-being. In particular, it proposes new sustainable alternatives to limit overfishing, such as fish farming and helicariculture, and provides them with material and social support.
We support Tube Awù in its project to educate and raise awareness about marine and coastal wildlife conservation in the Manyange na Elombo Campo marine national park through the practice of sport. This project aims to raise awareness among local populations about the natural resources available in the marine park. During two sports tournaments, the association will present the main marine and coastal species present, as well as the threats weighing on them, and implement actions to reduce these threats. This project mainly targets young people who will be able to participate in a traditional wrestling tournament and a men’s and women’s football tournament, which are unifying local sports.
